A recent article in the Huffington Post looked to a previous decade (the 80's) during an atmosphere of "welfare bashing" whereby recipients of Social Security Disability were implicitly not pulling their weight. In a nutshell, the resulting heightened scrutiny of disability benefits recipients led to thousands of people losing benefits with several people having committed suicide (as NY Times reported). Echoes of the past are emerging with a proposed SSA regulation in November, 2019 seeks to increase scrutiny and more frequent reviews of disability award recipients; thus the article serves an urgent warning to avoid the debacle of the 80's.
